Off-Campus Housing Fire Prevention and Life Safety

Smoke Detectors

  • Location: Smoke detectors should be mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in the area leading to each sleeping room. For any questions about installation, call the Berkeley Fire Department at (510) 981-5585.

  • When actuated, the detector should sound an alarm that is audible in the sleeping areas.

  • Testing: Most smoke detectors have a test button that, when pushed, will sound the alarm. You should test the detector monthly.

  • Chirping: Chirping indicates a low battery. If you hear the detector sound go off for a few seconds every so often, replace the batteries.

  • Replacing Batteries: Alkaline batteries should be replaced at least annually. Lithium batteries can last up to 10 years but be sure to check the alarm to make sure it is working.

  • If you need a smoke detector our office provides free smoke detectors to students upon request. Also, the Berkeley Fire Department has a program that provides free smoke detectors to single-family dwellings. For further information call our office at (510) 642-5995 or the Berkeley Fire Department at (510) 981-5585.
