Authorization Procedure for New Laser Users

Effective June 4, 2007

All campus personnel, including Principal Investigators (PIs), whose work will involve unsupervised use of Class 3b or 4 lasers are required to complete the following steps prior to the operation of laser(s). Any new PI, whether they will directly work with a laser or not, must also take the training outlined below.

To become an authorized laser user:

1) Enroll in the laser safety class by going to the Interactive Course Enrollment (ICE) website and search for course title: Laser Safety Training.

2) Arrange to obtain a baseline eye exam within 60 days of meeting the training requirement. Information on the eye exam policy and procedures can be found in Appendix D on the Laser Safety Manual.

3) After meeting the training requirement, the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) will add the new user to the PI's Laser Use Registration (LUR).

4) The new user reviews, receives (on the job) training on, and signs the applicable laser standard operating procedure (SOP). The PI will verify that the new user is authorized to use the laser(s) by initaling the SOP signature page.

5) During the next laser inspection, the LSO will verify that all users are listed and authorized.

NOTE: Please contact Eddie Ciprazo, campus laser safety officer if you have special laser safety training needs or circumstances, or if you have any questions regarding the revised campus laser safety training requirement.

Equivalent laser safety training that meets the campus requirement is also available at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL). Likewise, the campus training meets the LBNL requirement. Please contact the LBNL Laser Safety Officer, Ken Barat, at 495-2544 for training class information.
