Can We Use Candles For Our Event?


PERMIT SUBMITTAL


To request the use of candles for an event:

A. Fill out a Special Event Permit Form
  1. Complete top portion of permit form.
  2. Print applicant name, title, phone number, and sign where indicated.
  3. Submit form to EH&S at 317 University Hall or fax to 643-7595
  4. Permit will be reviewed by EH&S Fire Prevention Division, and you will be contacted regarding your permit’s status.
B. An inspection of the candle or open flame device may be required.


GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


A. Class I and II liquids and liquefied petroleum gases must not be used.
B. All devices or holders must be constructed to prevent the spilling of liquid fuel or wax at the rate of more than 1/4 teaspoon per minute if tipped over.

C. Liquid or solid fuel devices (such as wax) containing more than 8 ounces must self-extinguish if tipped over.

D. The device or holder must be designed so that it will return to the upright position after being tilted to an angle of 45 degrees from vertical.

EXCEPTION: Units that self-extinguish if tipped over and do not spill fuel or wax at the rate of more than 1/4 teaspoon per minute if tipped over.

E. The flame shall be enclosed, except as follows:

  1. Openings on the sides must not be more than 3/8 inch in diameter.

  2. Openings on the top and the distance to top must be such that a single layer of tissue paper placed on the top will not ignite in 10 seconds.

F. Chimneys must be made of noncombustible materials. Such chimneys must be securely attached to the device.

G. Fuel canisters must be safely sealed for storage.

H. Storage and handling of combustible liquid must be in accordance with Article 79 of the California Fire Code.

I. Shades, if used, must be made of non-combustible materials and securely attached to the device, holder or chimney.

CANDLES USED IN CONNECTION WITH CEREMONIES


J. Candles used in lodge halls and similar places must be limited to areas out of the reach or way of the occupants using the area.

K. Hand-held flame lighted candles are especially dangerous and must only be allowed when Deputy Fire Marshal’s have been consulted directly. Hand-held candles may be permitted. Please call our office at 642-3073 to inquire about hand-held candles. However, hand-held candles may never be passed from person to person.
