Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

UC Berkeley’s Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is comprised of subject matter experts, an animal health expert, an occupational physician, the campus biosafety officer, and community members. 

The committee meets to review Biological Use Authorizations (BUAs) on the first Monday of every month starting at 2:00 pm via Zoom. The IBC is a public meeting; however, RSVP by email is required.

A second, private meeting may be convened by the Committee for Laboratory and Environmental Biosafety (CLEB), which has the same members as the IBC. This meeting is held only if there is material to discuss that falls outside the NIH guidelines purview but still requires campus oversight.

BUA Review Deadlines

Generally, BUA submissions are due the first Monday of each month. Please contact bso@berkeley.edu to establish a BUA or edit your existing BUA on RSS BUA. Submit your completed BUA on or before the deadline to have your submission reviewed at the next meeting.

ACUC Review Deadlines

Protocols that include animal work must be reviewed by IBC or CLEB at least two months prior to ACUC review of the Animal Use Protocol. Please note that BUA approval is required before an AUP will be approved. Therefore, submission of the BUA should be three months prior to ACUC review.
